Web Design - Are You Making These Mistakes?
These days, lots of people try their hand at designing a website, whether for personal use or for commercial purposes. There are lots of free guides available online to help people get started and, if using a platform such as Wordpress, it needn’t be difficult to get your own site designed and live within a week - maybe even less. However, whilst designing a website isn’t overly difficult, making a good one requires some thought and planning. For starters, there are some mistakes that you can easily make which will make any visitors to your site quickly click the back button on their browser.
Many people make mistakes when it comes to the text on their website. It’s common to see random fonts used and often these are difficult to read or look unprofessional. Verdana was created specifically for reading on a computer screen and that is the safest font to use. Anything below a font size of 12 will be too small for most purposes. Remember that not everyone will have eyesight as good as your own. Keep the color scheme simple too. Green text on a red background, yellow text on a blue background, or some other random combination should be avoided.
Navigation mistakes are the biggest issue after text mistakes. If people can’t easily find their way around the various content and pages on your site then they won’t stick around very long. Rather than just having random links scattered around, have a menu bar on the left hand side of every page that contains links to every page on your website, or at least the most popular ones. If you have a very large site, create a sitemap (a page that contains a link to every other page) and link to it from every page.
Then, there are mistakes regarding compatibility with the various different web browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari, etc.) and screen resolutions that are available. Your newly designed site might look perfect on the browser and screen resolution that you were using during the design phase, but it might look really unprofessional when other people view it on different browsers and screen resolutions, as things may get out of sync. It might not even load at all for some other people in some instances. Therefore, it is essential that your check your finished design on a range of different browsers and screen resolutions. By amending and compromising parts of your design, you should be able to come up with something that loads properly for everyone.
By being aware of the above web design mistakes your site should function well and be easy to use. Once you have the basics in place, it is then the time to consider getting more adventurous with your designs.
