Those making websites, especially those making themselves instead of using a professional web design agency, often make the same mistakes, with these being the main ones to avoid:

One common mistake is to center all the material on your page, giving the website a look that is unprofessional. There is really no reason to design your website this way, especially when you consider that a full page left to right layout is always used for book and magazine text. People are simply not used to reading large amounts of centered text and so if they come across it on your website then they will see it, instantly think that it does not look ‘right’, and click the back button on their web browser.

Choosing background music for your site can create problems because first of all you will not find music which is satisfying to everyone and secondly the site will take much longer to load. Your visitors might even leave  if the music playing while they are waiting for your site to load is displeasing and they feel they are being forced to listen to it. If you simply cannot give up including music, at least offer an option with a prominently situated play button which allows visitors a choice in the matter.

Do not rely on JavaScript for any essential parts of your website design because approximately 20% of web users either cannot run JavaScript or choose not to. That means that part of your site will not work for them, and they will either think that your site was designed incorrectly or that you neglected to fix the problems that developed. The use of JavaScript, then, means that you might lose twenty percent of your visitors before they have looked over the content of your web pages.

Do not use flash for all or most of your website because search engines cannot read the flash content and your site will be given a lower ranking than sites with mostly text and images on them. You can use flash, but use it sparingly, and be sure that you also include a large amount of text on your site. If you ignore this advice then you will hardly get any visitors from Google, Yahoo and Bing, which are the best sources of getting visitors to your website.
